Last week a group called
Greenscool came into one of the improvished colonias in Guaymas called Fatima. Their idea was to recycle some solar panels from the well off tourist oriented community of San Carlos about 15 miles away from us. Their intent was to install these recycled panels on the roof of the school in Fatima to assist with their financial restraints and also to teach the children about being "green". In this poor community the idea of being "green" is a new one, as most of their time and thought is put into survival.
You can go to their site to read more about the project and see photos, you can also go to
Patagonia The Cleanest Line to read their article on it.
According to the
Guaymas government site this will be the first school in the country to generate their own power.

Great that the school is teaching the kids about green living.
We are thinking about Guaymas as a better place to stay for 4 or 5 months next winter. Assuming it may be a bit cheaper than San Carlos. Right now the weather is so dull that we are even thinking of packing up and moving down there altogether. That is a big step though.
Hi Vic: I was actually just thinking of you this morning.
Actually it is the group Greenscool that is doing the installation and teaching; but hopefully it will continue after they leave.
Yes, Guaymas is much cheaper than San Carlos to live in. Right now I know of a nice furnished one bedroom apt. in centro that is empty and rents for $350.00 per month, well actually a bit less than that as it is 3500 pesos. You would need to bring some dishes/pots/towels/bedding and a small TV and you would be all set. There is a frig, stove, washing machine in the apt.. The apt. also has free WiFi and cable TV included in the rent. You would have to pay for cooking gas and electricity. Don't think you would get something that cheap in San Carlos; but then I don't know what you are paying for your rental there. Maybe you can stay longer this year if you get this place for an extra month or so. lol
Looking forward to meeting you and don't blame you for wanting to get out of that weather. It was the biggest reason we moved.
Brenda - If you're referring to Lolita's place, it has just been rented to SIX men. Poor Lolita, wait till the first time they have a party.
Bliss: good grief that is crazy, poor Lolita. She will have her hands full. She didn't mention anything yesterday; but then I didn't actually ask her either.
Hope it works out well for her.
