Baby Shower

Saturday evening I attended another baby shower and they again had the "show".  The ladies seem to really enjoy this show. This time the performers had a  new performer with them and they had new wigs, (badly needed in my opinion) and new outfits also.  They seemed to do more singing, (lip syncing), this time and less off colour jokes; although there was still enough of those.

The decorations were cute as usual with the balloons made up to look like baby soothers, the baby will be a boy so the colours were blue and while.  Everyone was given a pin with either a plastic baby soother or safety pin or some other baby related item to wear and then were also given a stork/baby thingy with some candies to take home afterwards.  I forgot to take a picture of the table centerpieces; but they were of balloons and baby stuff in blue and white.  Very cute.
At one point in the evening they passed around a roll of toilet tissue and everyone was told to take some of it.  Lots of us didn't know what for so didn't think too hard, well actually didn't think at all before taking some and passing the roll to the next person.  Later on in the evening the mother to be stood up in front of everyone and was measured around the middle by each lady with their length of toilet tissue, much laughter ensued; but only a couple of ladies came close to her actual size.  They also played a sort of musical chairs to much laughter.
Snacks and drinks and lots of laughter.  Good time was had by all.

I Can See Clearly Now

I was having some trouble with my eyes lately and decided it was time for a checkup. I didn't realize that it had been 3 yrs. since my last one. I asked my landlady for a recommendation for an optometrist and she recommended Optica Economica. The one I went to last time was of the same name; but it closed at that location. Anyway I popped in one day to see if I needed to make an appointment for an exam or not and was taken right in. They had a sign in the window stating that for the month of May they have a special on, where you get 20% discount on a complete set of glasses. I only wanted new lenses so didn't ask about it.
It turned out that my prescription had changed quite a bit so I did need new lenses. He showed me that with the discount price a complete set of glasses was cheaper than just buying the lenses so ended up with a complete new pair. So the price was around the same as it was 3 yrs. ago for just lenses. Good deal.
It took a week for them to come in and they are fine. What a difference they make, no more headaches or blurred vision, I must have been straining my eyes for awhile I guess without realizing it.
I was invited to one of the neighbors daughter in laws baby shower last night so attended that with Nancy and Irene. Lots of ladies, lots of beer and snacks and a show put on by the same female impersonators/ lip sync singers as at a couple of other showers. A good time was had by all. I wasn't sitting in the best spot for taking pictures of them; but here are a couple anyway.

Gifts Galore

Yesterday the landlady called me downstairs to look at all the baby shower gifts. My goodness, what an amazing amount of baby stuff! We looked through it all exclaiming at how cute, cuddly, soft and tiny everything is. Later on yesterday another lady who was unable to attend the shower showed up with yet another gift.
I told N. that she needed a bigger house/extra room to put all the things in and that she has enough for 2 or 3 babies.
Bliss commented on my last post about the late hour that the shower began. That seems to be the regular time for things to begin here if the event is for an adult. Birthday parties, etc. seem to start late, get going even later and go on til all hours of the early morning. Parties for children seem to start around 4 or 5 in the afternoon and go on until the late evening or so we have found with the events that we have attended.

Baby Shower

Last evening I went to the baby shower for the landlords daughter in law. It was supposed to begin at 8 PM so we left just before that. People didn't really begin arriving til around 9:30 and by 10 PM it was in full swing.
The tables were covered in blue plastic and the centerpieces were blue styrofoam plant pots with balloons, candies, little crocheted baby clothes, etc. stuck into the pot on sticks. The pots were filled with blue and white net and looked really pretty, unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of one and didn't bring one home. The snack trays were decorated with little plastic foam booties which were filled with blue and white paper, candies, etc.. They were cute also and I brought one home with me.

We were all given a little yarn "baby" to pin onto our tops.

There was a DJ playing and then we were entertained by a show. There were 3 female impersonators who came out and lip synced to some songs and then they also told some rather off color jokes. My spanish vocabulary doesn't contain a lot of the words that were used in the jokes; but I got the idea anyway from their hand/body motions. Pretty funny. They performed for almost an hour before heading off. An interesting show. The DJ continued to play and some of the ladies danced with each other. The snacks and drinks flowed freely throughout the evening and a good time was had by all.
It was almost 2 AM before I arrived home, tired and happy. A fun evening.

The expectant mother with her gifts. The baby will arrive in about a month, and yes, it is known that it is a boy.

Just Another Day

Nothing too exciting going on here. We both went and got haircuts yesterday and then I went uptown shopping. The landlords grandaughter had her 6th birthday and the landlords daughter in law is having a baby shower on Saturday, so I needed to get some gifts.
I found a Mariposa Barbie (Butterfly Barbie) for the little girl and something for the baby shower, so the next stop was a place to get the gifts wrapped. I have talked about the gift wrapping places before and they never fail to impress. Yesterday I got both gifts wrapped and done up very prettily for about $2.40, I could never do it as well and for such a small cost. They are a really good deal.
This is the invitation for the baby shower to be held on Saturday evening. I kind of messed it up by writing on it as she was telling me, I didn't realise at the time that all the info. was on the back of the package, duh. Cute invitations. They are having a group, (landlord called them transvestites) perform some dancing for the entertainment. I am sure I will have more to say about that after I see it. Should be interesting fun.

Molasses Puzzle Solved

Molasses Puzzle Solved
Seeing as I had finally found molasses I decided that I better bake cookies. After I had them baked I took a plateful of them and the jar of molasses down to our landlady. She tasted the molasses and a lightbulb went off. It is the same as the piloncillos she says, the cones of brown sugar that you see everywhere in the stores. She says that you put a little water in a pan and melt the cone and then use it in your recipe. I am not sure how that would affect your sugar ratio in the recipe though, so I will have to stick with the already liquid form. You can also buy piloncillos in squares (rather than cones)with nuts, peanuts, etc. already in them. Ah...when I googled "piloncillos", I found a site that says to boil a piloncillo with a bit of water to make a molasses syrup. The ratio seems to be that 2 cones equal 1 cup of sugar. A couple of days later when Ciro and Irene were up visiting, they were telling me of a place in Sonora where apparently they grow the sugarcane and process it into the piloncillos. They said that you can go there and buy the liquid molasses also; but it is about 100 miles from here, more or less. The cones are made just for ease of transport, etc..
Roy drove me to spanish class on Thursday and we returned to the store to see if she had managed to get the easel. It was sitting out waiting for us and after checking that all the bits and pieces were there, we purchased it. Merry Christmas to us, (this was what we decided to get for our Christmas "gift").
Yesterday (Saturday), Roy and Ciro went fishing in the early afternoon. Around 5 PM, Irene and I were off to a baby shower for one of her nieces. We stopped at a couple of places on the way, first to say hello to some of her relatives and then to pick up her sister from work. Unfortunately her sister had to work until 7 PM so could not attend. Irene also pointed out where other members of her family live on the way to the salon where the shower was being held.
The baby is not born yet; but they know that it is going to be a girl, so everything was decorated with pink. The white tablecloths had overthrows of pink gingham with ceramic centerpieces of babies, each table had a different ceramic baby on it, so we wandered around looking at them all. There was a huge stork with his bundle holding a baby, a large floral arrangement on the main table, etc.. It was very pretty. We were each given a little thing to pin to our blouse, mine was a tiny baby bib with little colored balls inside, Irenes was a little angel head with wings. The momma to be had a pink corsage. We sat and visited with others, I actually recognised some of the ladies from the birthday party that we had attended earlier this month. Everyone sat around the tables visiting and snacking, I met lots of new people; but of course cannot remember names as usual. Some pictures were taken by the gift table, Irene obviously doesn't know how much I hate having my picture taken, as she dragged me along. A lady came in and did a bit of a show, I am not sure who she was impersonating; but she seemed to be known by everyone there. We were served a late dinner at around 9:30 which was very good. The meat was pork roasted with pinapple and was very tender and delicious, Irene said she will give me the recipe for it. Shortly after eating, we made our farewells and left, returning home around 10 PM. An enjoyable evening; but also one which showed me just how little spanish I do know and what a long road I have yet to travel to fluency. I probably understood about 20 % of the conversations. It was a good gabfest for the ladies and a fun time. Thank goodness there were none of the silly games played, like they used to do in Canada, how I hated those games.
I haven't touched my spanish homework so need to get at that today and also need to do some laundry.
