Gone Fishing

Gone Fishing
This afternoon we decided to get out of the house and go fishing. We asked Ciro and his son Ciro, who is on holidays right now, if they wanted to go with us. They did, so we headed out to San Carlos at about 3 PM. We decided to try out a different fishing spot today that Ciros friends had told him the fish were biting in. It was certainly easy on the eyes, as you can see in the photos below. We didn't catch a whole lot; but we did have lots of fun. I get as much enjoyment out of looking at the scenery as I do out of the fishing. Roy caught the first fish and then after that we all caught some. A great afternoon. We were still there at sunset so I tried to get a photo as the sun set behind Tetakawi mountain.

Nada

Nada
Nada (nothing) is exactly what we have been doing. More or less.
We did go fishing on Sunday. It was a perfect afternoon for it. It was a bit overcast, so it wasn't too hot, and there was no wind. We asked Ciro if he wanted to come and he did. We had a good day with everyone catching some. As it was Sunday there were some families there and therefore some action to watch as we waited for the fish to bite. One fellow and his wife drove up and watched for awhile and then asked me what I was using for bait. When I told him I was using Calamari, he asked if I would have some extra, sure I told him. He said that they had a rod back at their room and left to get it. His car plates were Californian and Ciro told me that some of the rooms have rods in them for the renters to use. They returned and he started to try to fish. He had never fished before so another fisherman helped him and showed him how to cast, etc.. His first cast on his own, he caught a fish! He was so excited that he was speaking spanish and english together in the same sentence, it was funny. When we left after dark he was still there fishing, his wife had left and come back several times by then. I think he was hooked! It was a nice afternoon and after watching the sunset, we packed up and came home.
I had asked Irene for the recipe for a roast pork (Cochinita Pibil) that we had at the baby shower supper and she wrote it out for me. I had to go uptown to get some achiote paste and laurel leaves; but then I was ready to try it on Monday. I stuck it all in the slow cooker and it was very good!

Flowers

Flowers
Here are some recent photos of the flowers. The plumeria is doing well considering that I got the slips in the fall.
Plumeria.

Desert Rose.

Yesterday Ciro asked if we wanted to go fishing and of course we did. It was very windy though and not exactly a good day for fishing. Roy caught a little Manta Ray about the size of a dinner plate, another decent sized one and some little ones. Young Alan caught a couple and Carlos, (Ciros youngest son), said that he thought he kept catching the same little fish over and over. I told him he was catching supper one bite at a time.
We may go fishing again today, we will see how the wind is.

Fish and Computers

Fish And Computers
As I mentioned in the last post I was having problems with my computer, well actually not with my computer but with the internet connection to the computer. It keep saying that I had no IP address. Strange, as Roys was working fine and we are using the same modem. The fellow came on Thursday and right after he left it went off again. Ciro tried to get him to come back again and phoned several times, no one showed up. Well it came back on Friday around lunch time and (touch wood!!!!) has remained on ever since. So who knows what the problem was.
Ciro came up on Saturday morning and wanted to know if we wanted to go fishing, the wind had not gotten up yet, so we went. We didn't catch much other than little ones, I thought that they were called Cabrillo; but when I searched the net to find a photo of one, I couldn't find anything. It is possible that I got the name wrong or maybe the spelling. The next time we go I will take the camera and take a picture of them. Ciros grandson came along also and he caught a couple and then decided that it was more fun climbing up and down the huge hill of gravel that was right there. He was very well behaved and very patient for a young fellow of his age. He didn't seem to be bored at all and came and checked out the fish as we caught them. We threw most of them back in, if they were healthy enough, the others we kept for bait.
We ended up going back to San Carlos for dinner that evening as we got a craving for pizza. We went to our friends restaurant and got in a nice visit as well.
On Sunday we went for shrimp tacos at "our" taco place and laughed when she asked if we wanted what we usually order. So, now we just have to show up and she hands us our order after confirming that we want "the usual". I guess we are regulars now.
Today one of the ladies that was in the spanish class that I took in San Carlos came into town. A friend of hers is visiting from England so we went out for lunch and had lots of visiting time. A nice afternoon. We went to eat at a restaurant called "La Barca" and had a nice lunch.
Gee, it sounds like all I do is eat!!! Actually I have gone to the laundromat the last 2 days in a row, catching up on doing all the bed linens and towels. I can't do all the big things at once, as our clothesline won't hold it all. I am glad to be caught up with that.
I am keeping an eye on the hummingbirds nest and hope to be able to get a photo of the babies when they hatch. I did some reading online about them and found out the the males do nothing (after their initial contribution), to help with the hatching or raising of the babies. They are not monogamous and do not mate for life as some birds do. Interesting reading; but I have still not been able to identify which variety these birds are.
Other than that, there is not too much going on, just the regular daily routine.

Está lloviendo (It's Raining)

Está lloviendo (It's Raining)
This morning we were awakened by some very loud thunder; a fast, hard shower followed a couple of loud rumbles. It didn't amount to much; but we are getting another shower right now. Spring showers? I hope that it washes the dust off of the plants. I took the photos below last night and the plants sure look dusty. NOTE: Long before I had finished writing this our shower was over.
Desert Rose buds.

Hibiscus flower.
This geranium just keeps blooming and blooming; although right now it has the least blooms on it that it has had all winter.
On Tuesday afternoon we decided to go fishing, well Roy was going to fish and I was taking my book along. Roy went over to see if Ciro wanted to come with us; but he wasn't home. We headed out to one of the marinas at San Carlos where they usually fish. They had piles of gravel all over and we had to make some detours to get to where we wanted to park. As we were driving in, I said to Roy, "wouldn't it be funny if Ciro was here fishing". We pulled in and sure enough there was Ciro. He just laughed, he said that he had gotten tired of visiting at home and the visitors didn't want to go fishing so he went by himself. If he wanted solitude that afternoon, he didn't get it. It was a holiday here and there were a lot of people there, fishing and just enjoying the afternoon with their families. The afternoon was full of music and chatter. Ciro had an extra fishing rod and gave it to me to try. My book got put away and I joined the men in their pursuit. It wasn't long before I caught a very little fish, it could have gone into an aquarium. Unfortunately, the way it hooked itself, it was dead, so he got used for bait. I then caught another little one of the same type. Nothing happened for awhile, then I caught a good sized one that was a keeper. All in all, I caught 4 or 5 and Ciro caught a couple. They kept nibbling at the bait; but didn't chomp down on the hooks. Roy didn't have a very productive day, his catch was a slimy, green sea cucumber that got thrown back. He didn't seem to want that for his supper. It was a fun afternoon and got me hooked.
Yesterday we decided to go to the downtown tianguis, looking for a fishing rod and reel for me. As we were riding the bus, we noticed a parade. The cars were decorated with fake flowers, with little children sitting on the hoods and roofs. The children were dressed as bees, butterflies and flowers. They looked really cute. As we were on our way to the tianguis I didn't have my camera with me, so no photos. I am assuming that the parade was because of the first day of Spring.
There were no rods or reels at the tianguis. We walked along the malecon up to the downtown area, we were going to sit in the park for awhile. Along the way Roy asked if I wanted to go to a couple of the fishing supply stores and look for a rod, so we revised our plans.
On the walk to the stores we passed the "Hotel Ruby" and the "Bar Ruby", these are old buildings; but still in operation. Part of the setting for the book: Guaymas Chronicles:La Mandadera by David E. Stuart were these two buildings. We both really enjoyed the book and would like to read the second one that he wrote about here: Zone of Tolerance: The Guaymas Chronicles. I peeked into the lobby of the hotel and it looked clean and neat, I didn't check out the bar.
We looked at one store and then continued on to another one, where we purchased a rod and reel. We then headed back to the plaza to sit in the park for awhile before going home.
Yesterday afternoon was my first spanish lesson with my new teacher, who very conveniently is only about 2 blocks from me. He wanted to find out just where I was at with my spanish, so we chatted in spanish for 3/4 of an hour. Questions and answers galore, I really had to concentrate; but caught almost everything he said. He decided that we will converse, work on the verbs and practice with the newspaper, etc.. It should be interesting!
I am anxious to try out my new fishing rod, so if it is nice this afternoon, (not too windy), we will go. We asked Ciro last night if he wanted to come and he said yes, so if nothing comes up for him the three of us will go. With Ciros large family quite often things will come up to prevent him from spending the afternoon fishing. Check back tomorrow for the story about the "one that got away".

Carnaval Parade -Number One

Carnaval Parade-Number One
Last evening Ciro came up to show Roy a bunch of new hooks he had gotten for fishing. They wanted to try using them, so after looking at the tide chart they decided to go fishing this morning at 6 AM. After they left this morning, I decided to bake cinnamon buns and regular buns. While the buns were rising I did some cleaning in the apartment. While they were baking I called both my mother in law and mother and had nice chats with them both.
When Roy returned from fishing we had some lunch and a rest before heading out to the parade. The schedule had said that the parade was to start at 3 PM; so we left home around 2 and walked down to a place on the route right by the water. The parade did not start until almost 5 PM, so we had a coke and joked around with some of the children sitting near us while we waited. There was the cutest little girl in a pretty dress, so I asked her mom if I could take her photo. Her mom said that was fine, and as I snapped the photo the little girl put both her hands up to her face. Her mom told her to put her hands down and then she gave me a more "professional pose". A real little cutie.

There are more photos of the carnaval and all the floats here: http://travel.webshots.com/album/557701929NfQGBB?vhost=travel
I did a little movie and put it on WebShots, here it is:

The band at the beginning of the video were waiting for the parade to begin right where we were sitting. At first they did some practising while waiting, so I took the video while they were practising.
There are parades tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday, so I imagine that we will be taking in more of the carnaval in the days to come.

¿Qué es esto? (What Is This?)

¿Qué es esto? (What Is This?)
This is a strange fruit that we were given the other day when we were at the orchard. Ciro told us that it is not an orange, lemon or grapefruit, and when I asked what it is, he just shrugged. This morning we decided it was time to eat it. It actually does not have any flavor at all, I have no idea what you would use it for. It would not make a good juice and does not taste good enough to just eat like an orange. I am thinking that it is a cross between 2 citrus fruits that did not turn out like it should have; but what do I know. It has a very thick, tough skin. Here are some photos.

Yesterday, Roy had a headache; but he took an aspirin and went fishing with Ciro and Gary at 2 PM. They didn't return until long after dark. They had caught a few fish; but nothing exceptional as they were fishing from the shore.
Irene had come up in the afternoon and invited us to go with them to a wedding in her cousins family. I asked her what time and she said that it depended on when our fishermen returned, probably around 8 or 8:30 she thought. I knew that Roy might not feel like it; but got our clothes out and ironed them just in case. By the time they returned, so had his headache and he wasn't feeling like going out to party. I told Irene that we wouldn't be going and she asked if I wanted to go without Roy, I didn't think it would be much fun to do that, so declined. Maybe next time. I was kind of disappointed; but didn't want to go solo.
Today I definately need to go to the bank and also to the doctor. It is supposed to cool off here because of a storm in the USA that is sending the cold down here. We actually had a few drops of rain here a few minutes ago. The current temperature is: 22 degrees C. and 72 degrees F. and feels chilly.
