Take Me Out To The Ball Game
Last night we decided to go to a ball game. The local team is called the Ostioneros de Guaymas and they play in the Liga Norte de Mexico. Teams in the league are Agua Prieta, Magdalena, San Luis, Ensenada, Caborca, Mexicali and Empalme. Guaymas right now is sitting in third place in the league. The have a website: http://www.clubostioneros.com/ where you can look at the standings, find out when the next game is, etc.. Tickets were 35 pesos each.
The game started right on time with a sparse crowd in attendance. I was surprised as I thought because they were playing the neighboring town of Empalme that the stands would be full. As time went on the stands did get fuller.
Vendors were selling the usual drinks, beer, chips, etc..
Guaymas was doing fine in the first couple of innings and had a lead of 5 - 0, then things started to go bad. By the 4th inning (which was never ending) Empalme was on its 3rd pitcher and Guaymas was on its 2nd. Empalme started hitting and the score board soon registered 9 - 5 for Empalme. Guaymas was making a comeback though. By this time 2 1/2 hrs. had gone by and our butts were sore from sitting on the hard seats so we decided that we were heading home. At the rate they were going we figured they might finish by midnight!
We did enjoy it and will probably return another time, with some seat cushions. On the way home we had the taxi driver drop us off at the torta stand for a torta before heading home.
Watering down the infield before game time.

For we rural beach folk, your stadium is truly uptown. I suspect I would need to drive to Manzanillo to find similar enjoyment.
Hi Brenda and Roy! That field looks so greeeeeennnnn...I don't remember seeing grass in Guaymas. Is it real? Good pics!
Steve, you have to remember that Guaymas city has a population close to 200,000 which is quite a bit bigger than Melaque I would imagine. We are lucky here that we do have some fine facilities. The Auditorium is another great facility here. We are lucky to be able to attend events here in the city without having to travel to them.
Cynthia: Yes, the grass is real. The soccer field that I showed the other day also was grass; although most of the fields were not. There are a few people with lawns here, the grass they use seems to be a coarser bladed grass than what we are used to up north. Personally I think the lawns are a major waste of water in a desert, actually anywhere if you are watering them; but that is just my opinion.
Cynthia: thanks for the compliment on the pics. glad you liked them.
We were at the game on Saturday night with Ensenada. We stayed at the Armida and so did the team. It was great fun to go to a Mexican Baseball Game on the 4th of July. We left after the 4th inning. Not much of a crowd and I suspect it had a lot to do with no booze being served before elections yesterday. Sorry we missed you and Roy. We did get to meet Jan, Bruce, Bliss and the Capt.
