Oaxacan Artisans

Internet connection this morning is really wonky for some reason, we seldom have problems with it, so when we do it is frustrating.
Yesterday when we were uptown, we noticed the Oaxacan artisans had set up booths in the Plaza de Pescador. They seem to come and set up every once in awhile in one of the plazas; but we seldom see anyone buy anything. People look; but few buy. How can they make a living doing this? Are they really coming all the way from Oaxaca? That is a long way to come for only a few sales. I don't know the answers, and I have never thought to ask any of the vendors when we are looking. I always think of the questions after we have left.

I guess you gotta do what you gotta do to make a living and apparently that is their way of making a living. It is sad though that they come the distance for so few sales.

I seem to have been missing your feed so have set it up again. Guaymas looks an interesting place. We have been thinking that it would be a less expensive place to stay for long term. We will be looking there for 2010 rental for a longer period than this coming year.

Hopefully the Oaxacans will do better when the cruise ships start coming in. I haven't seen many craftspeople in this area, all the crafts seem to come from somewhere else.

glorv1: Yes it is too bad; but perhaps the sales increase in the evenings.
Vic: It might be hard to look for a 2010 rental in Guaymas in 2009. Rentals are usually posted when they are empty and filled as soon as possible. Hard to find something that far in advance. You pretty much have to come and stay in a hotel for a week or two and look for something at that time.
1st Mate: Don't know if they will do better when the ships come or not. The ship is here for only one day so can't see that it would make a huge difference, though probably some if they are here at the same time.
Ironwood carvings are something that is a Sonoran craft from this area.
